Volkswagen have lifted the covers off an updated version of their top of the range Golf R. The sporty hatchback has been treated to optimised driving dynamics, exclusive standard equipment and an output of 245kW, an increase of 10kW over its predecessor.
The new Golf R is based on Volkswagens eighth generation Golf which was updated earlier this year. Its dynamic character is reflected in the redesigned front end which incorporates LED Plus headlights, an illuminated VW badge and air curtains in the bumper. LED taillight clusters have been added to the rear and a larger roof spoiler through which air flow is routed provides additional downforce.
New 19-inch Warmenau forged wheels are available as an optional extra. These wheels have a clean appealing design, weigh just eight kilograms each and aid in efficient brake cooling.
Interior improvements
The interior is ergonomically tailored to the driver with exclusive R touches. Upfront are sport seats which incorporate integrated head restraints.
The hardware and software of the infotainment system have also been revamped and now feature a 32.8cm display, the largest display offered by Volkswagen. Operation of which has been simplified thanks to new graphics and a fresh menu structure for the touch display. The control of the illuminated touch sliders for the automatic climate control and volume control as well as the IDA voice assistant, which utilises ChatGPT to answer questions, has also been redeveloped. Ahead of the driver is the enhanced Digital Cockpit Pro.
Under the bonnet
The Golf R is fitted with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine paired to a seven-speed DSG transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive with R-Performance Torque Vectoring. In its latest state of tune this engine produces 245kW and 420Nm. The top speed of 250km/h can be raised by 20km/h to 270km/h with the fitment of the optional R-Performance package.
In addition to unlocking additional performance the R-Performance package offers two additional driving modes designed to appeal to motorsport enthusiasts including Drift and Special. Special was honed for the conditions of one of the most demanding racetracks in the world, the Nurburgring Nordschleife and optimises the suspension and drivetrain for track driving. The R-Performance package also includes a GPS lap timer and G-meter, incorporated into the Digital Cockpit Pro.

Volkswagen have also added the exclusive Golf R Black Edition to the offering. This model features a sophisticated dark look which includes dark VW badges and R logos, black R brake callipers with a dark R logo, black 19-inch Estoril wheels and black exhaust trims as well as darkened IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights.
