The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport features the models mid-life cycle upgrades as well as a variety of subtle improvements, resulting in the best iteration of the brands front wheel drive hot hatch yet.
The Golf GTI Clubsport is differentiated by a completely updated front end that is characterised by exterior details such as redesigned LED headlights, which now merge with the radiator grille. VWs latest generation IQ.LIGHTS LED matrix headlights are also available as an option.
A horizontal LED strip in the radiator grille has been added below the iconic red line that has characterised this model since 1976. The Volkswagen logo at the front is now also illuminated, all of which contributes to an unmistakeable lighting signature.
The lower portion of the front bumper is distinguished by larger wings which are shaped like arrows, while the front spoiler, radiator grille and surrounding applications are finished in high-gloss black on this model.
At the rear the new LED taillights are present, which can also be upgraded to 3D taillights with a dynamic indicating function as part of the IQ.LIGHT LED package. The boot features a larger rear spoiler while a tailpipe on each side of the high gloss rear diffuser remains. An optional Akrapovic exhaust system is available as part of the Race package.
The front doors now feature red GTI lettering while a beefier side sill and vinyl graphic tie the front and rear upgrades together. The Golf GTI Clubsport is fitted with new 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels which feature a design inspired by the classic Detroit wheel that was fitted to the fifth generation Golf GTI. The Golf GTI Clubsport can also be ordered with optional Warmenau forged wheels which weigh just 8kg per rim.
Sporty interior updates
The biggest interior update is the fitment of a newly developed multifunction leather steering wheel, now featuring physical buttons, from where the majority of functions can be controlled. The steering wheel features perforated leather and paddle shifters for manual control of the seven-speed DSG transmission.
An upgraded infotainment system, which is now more intuitive and simpler to operate, features expanded functionality including the new IDA voice assistant with Chat GPT integration. The latest generation digital instruments are on board while the standard Digital Cockpit Pro allows the driver to choose from three different graphic configurations.
Premium sport seats with integrated head rests as well as ArtVelours which adorn the seats and door coverings differentiate the Clubsport from regular GTI models.
Under the bonnet
The VW Golf GTI Clubsport is fitted with the latest generation EA888 turbocharged engine. Thanks to alterations to the engine control unit, boost pressure as well as internal upgrades the unit now produces 221kW and 400Nm, allowing the Golf GTI Clubsport to sprint to 100km/h in 5,6 seconds. An optional Race package is available which removes the 250km/h limiter and allows for a top speed of 267km/h.
Power is transferred to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG transmission. Drivetrain updates include larger 18-inch brake discs while the progressive steering, vehicle dynamics manager, front-axle differential lock and Dynamic Chassis Control system have also been refined to ensure a high level of dynamic driving performance.
The Golf GTI features four driving modes, but the Clubsport gains a fifth mode. This Special mode alters the Dynamic Chassis Control accordingly and ensures that systems relevant to the driving dynamics are matched to the track characteristics of the Nurburgring Nordschleife where the Clubsport’s driving dynamics were honed to perfection.
