Mitsubishi has updated the Pajero Sport for the Mzansi market and the vehicle looks good. Launched today with its new look and added features, the 7-seater Pajero Sport competes in a very small segment of the market, one that really only has two other players in the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest. The fellow Japanese is the market leader with monthly sales that have, until the recent lockdown, been regularly characterized by three digits.
The new Pajero Sport then, has a lot of work ahead of it. Judging only by its looks we could call it a winner. The so-called Dynamic Shield design is the new face of the brand and highlights its bold history and heritage. Tough, uncompromising, yet comfortable and approachable. The front grille then, is the large shield, and it is surrounded by LED headlights, daytime running lights and fog lights. Cornering lights are also included, which illuminate into curves when turning. Mitsubishi has fitted new 18-inch alloy wheels to the vehicle.
A thicker bumper design at the rear end shows the difference between old and new, while a diffuser gives it some sporty stance. The two hammer-shaped rear lights border a chrome bar, while the roof wears a “cap”, again showing some sportiness. Occupants will appreciate the repositioned side steps too. Remember the Pajero Sport is a Mitsubishi, which means it has the off-road heritage in its DNA. Therefore a best-in-class approach angle of 30-degrees and a 24-degree departure angle have been included.
These should work well with the Super Select 4WD-II system in the two 4WD models. The other model on offer is a 4x2. With the former you get selectable off-road modes namely Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand or Rock. A rotator also gives the choice of 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc. An electromagnetic handbrake is part of the package, giving extra comfort both on and off-road.
Interior appointments are pretty comprehensive, and include a 20.3cm touch screen with app control for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth with voice control, automatic dual-zone climate control, dual USB access and a 220AC 150W two-pin plug in the second row. The Exceed model adds a sliding roof, an electronic tailgate and Mitsubishi Remote Control Connectivity.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is powered by a 4-cylinder, 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine that delivers 133kW of power and 430Nm of torque. Both 4WD and 4x2 models come standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
