The evergreen Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series has been treated to a variety of choice upgrades to ensure that it is able to retain its Master of African title for many years to come. Updates include a new powertrain option, styling enhancements, upgraded technology and enhanced specification.
A new powertrain option
Biggest news is the fitment of the 1GD 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This is the same engine that has been well proven in Toyota models such as the Hilux, Fortuner and Prado and produces a respectable 150kW at 3400rpm and 500Nm from 1600rpm. While Land Cruiser fans might scoff at this smaller capacity powertrain, it does provide a substantially enhanced driving experience. In addition, the automatic transmission makes the Land Cruiser better suited for a wider variety of applications.
Numerous mechanical changes have been made to ensure optimal cooling and performance in tough conditions and when towing, as the 3500kg braked towing capacity has been retained.
The tried and trusted Land Cruiser engines in the form of the 4.0 petrol, 4.2 diesel and 4.5 diesel mated to five-speed manual transmissions remain part of the range.
The Land Cruiser 70 Series is equipped with a part time 4x4 system that features low-range gearing, durable live axles and coil suspension upfront. The four-cylinder models now also feature front and rear locking differentials for ultimate off-road traction.
Updated styling that adds iconic touches
The updated Land Cruiser 70 Series range in both bakkie and station wagon configurations is immediately recognisable thanks to updated exterior styling.
This includes a new square grille with black mesh pattern and TOYOTA lettering above the three-slot cooling vent inspired by the 75 Series Land Cruiser, while a small hood vent above the grille is reminiscent of the original 40 Series model. A wide bumper and black over fenders give the 70 Series a muscular stance, paired with dark grey metallic 16-inch alloy wheels. The Station Wagon models now sports a steel bumper.
Additional standard specification
All 70 Series grades gain a new centre console which consists of a lidded centre storage box, cupholder and multiple small item compartments. Station Wagon variants boast added functionality thanks to second row seats with 60:40 split folding functionality and can be tumbled forward to maximise cargo space. All variants powered by the 2.8 GD-6 engine are upholstered in a durable grey fabric, while the Station Wagon VX grades gain leather upholstery and a state of the art Rockford Fosgate sound system.
Four-cylinder versions gain Downhill Assist Control for steady, controlled off-road descents, which automatically modulates the brakes to safely navigate steep declines. The Station Wagon VX variant is also fitted with a new reversing camera, to help make parking in tight spaces easier.
