Toyota have given their evergreen Hilux the Gazoo Racing treatment which sees the new model, badged Hilux GR-S, reach new heights of performance, ride comfort and appearance.
Heavily inspired by Toyota’s Dakar Rally winning heritage the Hilux GR Sport III offers bakkie owners a sportier Hilux with a number of unique touches.
Significant exterior enhancements
When compared to a standard Hilux the GR-S III features an increased track of 140mm upfront and 155mm at the rear, which results in improved stability both on an off-road. Suspension has been enhanced with the addition of red monotube 46mm diameter shock absorbers. The brake discs have grown in size too and now measure 17 inches upfront and 15 inches at the rear.
However, the biggest changes are to the exterior where the GR-S now features an imposing look and powerful stance. A dynamic, imposing demeanour from all angles signifies an unrivalled sense of purpose, key to this is the bold black over-fenders which cover the enhanced track and accentuate the GR-S III’S muscular stance.
A new air curtain structure including a brand-new bumper with functional fog lamp bezels contributes to increased aerodynamics. A variety of premium exterior design details includes a black G mesh front grille featuring a classic Toyota name logo, black sidesteps, mirrors and door handles. A silver coloured protective front underguard, black rear bumper and distinctive GR logos compliment the purposeful appearance. The Hilux GR-S III is only available in four exterior colours, including white, red, black and a new chromium silver.
This striking look is emphasised by new 17-inch lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich all terrain tyres which cover red brake callipers.
The bodywork and suspension upgrades have also resulted in improved off-road ability. This includes an improvement in the approach angle from 29 to 30 degrees and enhanced ground clearance which was achieved with the help of a 20mm increase in ride height and the fitment of off-road tyres.
Under the bonnet the tried and tested 2.8-litre turbodiesel does duty providing 165kW and 550Nm and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Bespoke interior touches
The interior of the Hilux GR-S is differentiated by a premium black monochrome colour theme which creates a stylish feel and is accompanied by sporty red accents such as the contrasting red seat belts, which emphasise the passion behind the GR identity.
Paddles behind the steering wheel give the option of shifting gears manually while aluminium sport pedals complete the additions to the controls. GR details are also present on the information display and instrumentation.
The interior is home to Toyota’s multimedia system, operated via an eight-inch touchscreen display. The GR-S III comes standard with a JBL sound system along with nine speakers.
Black suede and leather sport seats with silver stitching and perforation elevate the interior appearance and provide exceptional comfort as well as enhanced grip, minimising sliding during instances of higher lateral forces.
Completing the high-quality look and feel of the Hilux GR-S cabin is a new hydrographic ornament on the door trim and dashboard.
