The all-new Mitsubishi Triton has finally gone on sale in South Africa. Now in its sixth generation, the Triton has been completely redesigned from the ground up with all elements including the interior and exterior design as well as the chassis, ladder frame and engine completely reimagined.
Rugged design
Based on the Beast mode design concept, the Triton combines the Mitsubishi Motors design with the toughness and strength expected of a bakkie.
The frontal design incorporates the now well-known Dynamic Shield but the form has been accentuated by a robust, three-dimensional front grille, fenders and bumper. Daytime running lights comprise of three L-shaped LED lights which are paired with three-dimensional three-light headlights below them. The horizontally themed body sides are composed of large solid surfaces which highlight the robust doors and which contrast sharply with the overhanging fender panels. At the rear T-shaped taillights emphasise width while also enforcing the sturdy design.
Spacious, high-quality interior
A spacious, refined cabin with high-quality materials and advanced noise reduction technology ensures a comfortable driving experience.
The interior is characterised by a horizontally themed instrument panel and a variety of geometric shapes and metallic elements. An eight-inch infotainment system is positioned at eye level for ease of use and features smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ahead of the driver is a seven-inch multi-information display that offers all the necessary information at a glance.
The interior is noticeably roomier thanks to it being 50mm wider than the previous Triton. Front seat adjustment is also class leading, which allows even the tallest of drivers to find the optimum seating position. Rear seats offer class leading shoulder and knee room.
Safety built in
The new Triton has been built around a variety of active and passive safety systems. Central to this is the Super Select II system with Active Yaw Control which works by applying the brake to a spinning wheel and distributing the driving torque to wheels gripping the road surface. This is backed up by systems such as Active Stability & Traction Control, Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist. Passive safety features include driver and passenger airbags on single cab models. Double cab GL models are equipped with driver, driver knee and passenger airbags while all other derivatives add front, side and curtain front and rear airbags in addition.
Under the bonnet
A newly developed 2.4-litre DI-DC engine utilises a variable geometry turbocharger to achieve improved output and efficiency and offers 135kW at 3 500rpm and 430Nm from 2 250rpm and is mated to either a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission.
GL models are driven by a 2.4-litre DI-DC engine that offers 81kW at 4 000rpm and 200Nm from 1 000rpm and which is paired to a five-speed manual transmission.
Legendary 4x4 status maintained
The Mitsubishi Triton has always been renowned for its off-road ability and key to this is the brands Super Select 4WD-II system which provides outstanding all-terrain performance both on-road and off-road. Drivers can choose from four different modes, selected via a dial selector to match the various driving conditions, which include two high, four-high, four-high with the centre diff locked and four-wheel drive low range. In addition there are seven driving modes which offer tailored performance for different surfaces.
Practicality built in
The entire Triton range strikes a great balance between lifestyle and commercial applications and key to this is a larger load bin and 3.5-ton towing capacity. The cargo bed has also been lowered by 45mm to 820mm for added practicality.
An extensive model range
The new Triton is being launched with an eleven model range which includes single-cab, double-cab, 4x2 and 4x4 options as well as commercial focused variants and premium lifestyle editions, ensuring that there is a Triton for every use case. The double-cab range includes a GL derivative, GLS 2WD auto and GLS4WD manual and auto.
Mitsubishi Motors are also offering three special editions based on the top of the range double-cab GLS 4WD, but which have been tailored specifically for South African customers. This includes the Triton Athlete, which is aimed at urban trendsetters, the Triton 46 which is crafted for overlanding enthusiasts and hardcore adventurers and the Triton Xtreme that is designed for motorists who would like to balance city life with outdoor adventures. Each model is fitted with a variety of accessories and aesthetic enhancements that are well suited to the intended use case.
Class leading warranty
Adding to the value for money proposition is the fact that all Mitsubishi Triton models are now sold with a five-year/unlimited mileage, unrestricted warranty as well as a five-year/90 000km service plan. This warranty also includes five-year unlimited mileage roadside assistance.
