Volkswagen will be relaunching the Golf nameplate in South Africa, when a line-up of 1.4-litre Golf 8.5 models go on sale in April.
Since the launch of the Golf 8 in 2020, only Golf GTI and R derivatives of one of SA’s favourite hatchbacks have been available.
Volkswagen believe that the introduction of regular Golf models holds value for the brand, due to the strong heritage of the Golf nameplate in South Africa, which they would like to see continue. Volkswagen also believe that by not offering regular Golf models, they are currently missing out on a slice of the fleet and rental market with whom the Golf 7, 1.4-litre models were very popular.
All the latest tech
The latest generation Golf 8, which was recently facelifted globally, is set to impress with a next generation infotainment system, a more intuitive user operating experience and a sharper front-end design.
The new front end is differentiated by visually defining features which include a Volkswagen logo that is now illuminated as well as newly designed LED headlights. IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, which are available on top of the range models incorporate a new high-performance main beam that boasts a range of up to 500m.
Four well specced models to choose from
The initial Golf offering will include four derivatives that are all fitted with the same 1.4 TSI engine and which offers 110kW and 250Nm while promising a good balance between economy and fuel consumption.
The new Golf range will be available in Life, Life+, R-Line and R-Line+ specification grades.
As the entry point into the range the Golf Life offers a great combination of style and technology thanks to the standard fitment of Eco LED headlights and 16-inch Norfolk alloy wheels. Interior highlights include a 12,9-inch infotainment system, six-speaker audio system, 10-colour ambient lighting, 10-inch integrated digital cockpit, wireless app connect and cruise control.
Life+ models add to this offering with the addition of Driver Profile Selection, a rear-view camera, 30 colour ambient lighting and Art Velour covered seats.
R-Line models add a number of sporty additions including R-Line bumpers, 17-inch Coventry style alloy wheels and LED plus headlamps. Interior additions include a multi-function heated steering wheel with gearshift paddles, progressive steering with sports suspension, Climatronic three zone automatic climate control with allergen filter and controls in the rear, keyless entry and R-Line seat trim covers with integrated headrests.
The top of the range R-Line+ adds IQ Matrix LED headlights that include an illuminated VW logo, a power adjustable driver’s seat, active high beam, heated and cooled front seats covered in Vienna leather incorporating R-Line logos, brushed stainless steel paddle shifters and 18-inch Leeds alloy wheels to the offering.
