The
Corolla is basically the Hilux of the sedan segment, however with more customer interest invested in compact crossovers, it was time for the
Corolla to evolve. This is the
Corolla Cross and it is the first foray into the crossover segment for the
Corolla.
A crossover
Corolla… Why did it take so long to implement this truly fantastic idea? Since its introduction the
Corolla Cross has become extremely popular, in fact some 2384 were sold just last month. The
Corolla Cross has the right name and the right badge, but which one is best for you? This article aims to explain the current
Corolla Cross model offering.
Corolla Cross Hybrid
The
Corolla name has a rich and diverse history spanning 12 generations, having racked up over 50 million global sales - making it one of the most successful vehicle model ranges ever. Originally spawned as a compact city car in 1966, the
Corolla has continued to evolve in line with the needs of the times and of the regions it is sold in.
The
Corolla Cross represents the first foray into the crossover/SUV space and combines the respected core-product characteristics
Corolla is known for, with a new body shape that offers enhanced function and utility. The
Hybrid model makes use of a 1.8-litre 2 petrol engine that develops 72kW and 142Nm. The electric motor develops 53kW and 163Nm when at full capacity. This enables the
Corolla Cross Hyrbid to achieve a claimed 4.3l/100km.
Corolla Cross GR-S
For the owner looking for a touch of sportiness, then the
GR-S Corolla Cross should satisfy your desire. The
Corolla Cross GR-S features a bespoke exterior package with a revised front grille, finished in gloss black, which now extends towards the headlamp assembly. The lower apron too is finished in gloss black along with the signature
'GR Mesh'. A further differentiator from the 'normal'
Corolla Cross, are the vertical air ducts which incorporate compact fog lamp units. A strong horizontal cross bar and large
Toyota insignia complete the bold façade.
To further add to the sporty character of this model, designers and added black exterior mirrors are paired with a black roof and black roof rails to craft a sporty bi-tone design. The rear calls upon a black roof spoiler, black tailgate trim and blacked-out rear bumper diffuser to echo the
GR theme. The package is completed by a
GR badge affixed to the rear.
The C
orolla Cross GR-S employs the existing 1.8-litre petrol engine, coupled to a
CVT transmission with seven pre-programmed 'steps' to simulate a close-ratio transmission in manual shifting mode. It delivers 103kW and 172Nm while sipping just 6.8 l/100 km on the combined cycle.
