HAVAL and
Chery have completely changed the way in which we look at the segment thanks to their feature packed offerings that make the average
Polo seem expensive. Now
BAIC has joined the party and its offering is equally as appealing.
Did you know that
Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. (BAIC), is one of the leading automobile manufacturers in
China. The
BEIJING X55 is a compact
SUV with avant-garde styling, excellent power, advanced technology and the latest generation of the
BAIC Group's BMFA (Beijing modular functional architecture) platform chassis, which underpins future vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle models.
In terms of design, the
X55 is sleek and modern, with a sleek body that is designed to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics. It looks great, modern and interesting. A futuristic design seems to be the order of the day here however it is not overly complex in its approach. It is sporty yet somewhat subtle. The flush door handles are a plus point. They extend when approached with the key for easy entry. A rather nice touch, to be honest.
The interior is also designed to provide a comfortable and luxurious experience, with leather seats and a range of hi-tech features. The
X55 also features a range of extras including a sunroof, rear camera and large screens which really do modernise the interior experience. Two screens rest atop the dashboard with the driver display allowing for a choice of three themes while the central screen houses most of the vehicle controls and infotainment system. A disadvantage however is that there is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The
X55 also features an advanced driver assistance system, which is designed to make driving easier and safer. The system includes lane departure prevention, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. The
X55 also comes with an advanced navigation system which can be used to map out the most efficient route to your destination.
All
Beijing X55 models are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that features a variable geometry turbocharger. These units produce 130 kW and 305 Nm torque from as low as 1500 RPM. It's paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and sends power to the front wheels
All models in the
Beijing X55 range are equipped with 6 airbags and the usual array of driver safety systems. ABS with EBD, Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill Start Assist, and Hill Descent Control are all standard fare while ISOFIX child seat anchors are situated at the rear.
We will be getting the
Beijing X55 for an extended test period soon where we can further elaborate on what it is like to live with.
