Volkswagen CC Quick Launch

VW CC. That's it. Without a doubt the shortest name of any car in history but why CC? Is this a Coupé Cabriolet? Is it yes yes, as Italians say it? Clearly not. CC is short for Comfort Coupé. Not coupé with 2 doors but a 4-door "coupé" – thanks to Mercedes-Benz CLS that started this controversy. Many of us have seen this long sleek car as Passat CC but here it is simply dubbed CC. Volkswagen reckons the CC is so unique that it deserves its own name, as VW sedan flagship.

Certain cars carrying the VW logo just look superb – Eos, Scirocco, Golf GTI… and now CC. The VW CC is the first VW product that can be described as long sleek luxury car. The measuring tape says the VW CC is only 1.42m high – or rather low, like a sports car – and also long and broad. Frameless doors and the long flowing coupé-like silhouette impart a gracious dynamic feel.

The traditional corporate face is now very wide, while the typically VW twin-round taillights are oval-shaped to flow with the design theme. Note the integrated horizontal spoiler lip.On the tail-end are two just the 2 letters CC – neat and simple. No engine nomenclatures either.

VW CC Models and Spec

Board the Volkswagen CC and noted is the remarkable spaciousness and high specification. The CC was designed to seat 4 people in luxurious comfort – it is a Comfort Coupé, remember. In front are comfortable sports seats with ventilation optional. Rear passengers get treated to 2 individually-formed seats with a centre console.

Standard is park distance control and Park Assist that automatically steers the car into parallel parking. Other options include the Rear Assist camera that cleverly conceals itself in the VW bootlid logo. For adaptive suspension there is the DCC option and for a large sunroof, one can choose the Panoramic roof.

Volkswagen CC Self-sealing Tyre

New Technology: Self-sealing Tyres

A technology breakthrough are the Conti-Seal tyres, fitted to the new Volkswagen CC. These self-sealing mobility tyres contain a special viscous liquid that seeps into a small hole, sealing the puncture. This has the benefit that the VW CC will stay mobile even when the tyre is punctured. This is not a RunFlat tyre and therefore doesn't have any of the associated negatives. A tyre pressure monitor is standard on all Volkswagen CC.

Volkswagen CC Engines and Gearboxes

Here is a surprise. No big displacement hungry engines – just civilised and very capable. The 2.0TDI engine in 125kW guise is fitted with the fantastically smooth and immediate DSG auto, while the award-winning multi-talented 2.0TSI turbo petrol engine is offered in manual (strange for this class of car) or Tiptronic. Later this year a 3.6 V6 engine, driving all wheels through 4Motion and DSG will come to market. Both 4-cylinder 2-litres are very capable of providing smooth quiet, ample pulling power.

Price and Market Positioning

Another surprise. Volkswagen says, despite aping the expensive CLS Benz, this car has no direct rivals – only peripheral competitors. When looking at the price and package, anyone will agree that this is a great buy. 2.0TDI DSG starts at R348 745, 2.0TSI manual and Tiptronic R353 900 and R365 400 respectively. The V6 range-topper will be R451 260, containing a lot of added spec over the 4-cylinder models. All these prices are only a few grand more than the smaller, older, conservative Passat.

Rivals

Volkswagen says the peripheral rivals would be traditional coupé ranges but prices and the 4 doors groups it with midsize exec sedan rivals like Alfa Romeo 159, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Honda Accord, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Size-wise it is comparable to Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Lexus GS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and CLS.
